CM – Mark Madden: Kris Letang has been great for Penguins, despite Twitter’s suggestions

One of the best things about the Pittsburgh Penguins season is that Twitter has a keen eye or maybe had to absorb a little further south.

But Matheson and Ceci are playing so well that they have become the team’s second-largest defensive pair and have usurped John Marino and Marcus Pettersson. This has resulted in Matheson and Ceci being ignored by Twitter, which hates to be wrong.

Letang has 41 points in 51 games and is the best plus 18 team. He had an assist and was 3-0 in Washington’s 3-0 win on Saturday. Letang weighs risk against reward and manages the score and the situation. The penguins have become much more systematic, and Letang is shopping.

At 34, Letang is having one of its best times of the year. The eye test and the unusual statistics largely confirm this.

However, this is not important for Twitter. If Letang makes a mistake – as he did in coverage when the Penguins dropped a late goal and ultimately a losing point in Thursday’s overtime win at DC – Twitter dips viciously as Twitter breaks roots for Letang.

Twitter reflects the sad tribalism that is ruining society. Twitter does not judge objectively. Twitter picks pages, plays favorites, and distorts reality. Twitter needs to be right, especially when it isn’t.

Twitter believes Letang may not be able to play well. That’s the story of Twitter. « You won the 2017 trophy without him! »

Yes, we know. But the penguins won a Stanley Cup in 2009 and 16, with Letang playing a major role. Letang scored the cup winner’s goal in San Jose in 16.

Twitter is 10% OK, 90% sump. If it required the use of real names and profile photos, Twitter would be much better, maybe even bearable.

This is not the case, however, so idiots operate under a smooth, anonymous grip like @RutherfordHater. That mocks the ex-penguin GM who picked up two trophies for Pittsburgh and is still helping the penguins win through its acquisitions of Ceci, Matheson and Kasperi Kapanen last off-season.

The NFL Draft is a crapshoot. Pro teams draw college kids. These kids jump to a much higher level where the game is played very differently. It often takes years for a team to really know what it’s got. Who knows if a selection is good or not?

That’s good. When it comes to sports, Twitter has always been a talk radio distilled into a 24/7 barrage that is sadly addicting.

Knee jerk reaction is one thing. But to make conflict deeply personal and obscenely offensive – via a draft pick! – is mean and sick. It was far worse than decency allows me to describe.
As Mike Tyson said, « Social media has made it too easy for you to respect people and not get slapped in the face for it. »
