Remy Gardner led across the line when Enea Bastianini survived a late attack to win the Moto2 championship in Portugal.

Remy Gardner left the final round of the 2020 championship to claim his first win in a tense Portuguese Moto2 race in which Enea Bastianini took the world title after crossing the fifth line at Portimao.

Up front, the Australian had put his Onexox TKKR SAG Racing bike on pole and led the first few laps before being overtaken by Luca Marini, who was looking for a maximum score to snatch the crown.

Since Gardner had nothing to lose, he pulled his Kalex forward again on the penultimate lap and clinched pole, a first win and the fastest lap of the race. Unbelievable, Gardner was faster on the last lap of the race than on his pole lap. Run across the line at 1. 609s, he’s the 26th. different winners in all classes this season – a new record.

When he survived an early fear in which he met neutral and straightened up, almost picking up Bastianini, who was sitting behind him at the time, second place wasn’t enough to lead Marini from Sky Racing Team VR46 to the title. His valiant effort left him nine points short.

Sam Lowes, who rode with broken bones in hand, also did his best. Third on the checkered flag, the number 22 was also nine points behind in the title hunt.

The EG 0,0 Marc VDS driver finished second and was there with a scream for the title when Bastianini made a mistake, but it shouldn’t be for the Briton who was gracious in the defeat.

Marco Bezzecchi was fourth ahead of Bastianini at the second Sky start in the race, but his point difference meant that his title hopes were initially far away.

The title went to Enea Bastianini, who was attacked for her position throughout the race. He fought early hard passes from Lowes’ team-mate Fernandez and a late retirement for the position of constantly improving Jorge Martin to take a hard-earned fifth place that rewarded him with the Moto2 2020 title ahead of his promotion to MotoGP.

Martin had missed a session after a rare engine failure in Moto2 that made him catch up. He found a different line than most and was confident enough to take a series of late lunges as he finished sixth for Red Bull KTM Ajo.

Joe Roberts saw a late race pace spike, finishing seventh for Tennor American Racing and almost catching Martin’s turn.

He was clearly ahead of Augusto Fernandez, who gave his teammate Lowes excellent support on the way to eighth place wherever possible, and Lorenzo Baldassarri, who completed the top ten for Flexbox HP 40.

Marcos Ramirez was right behind him in eleventh place in Tennor American Racing’s second start and was the best of the rookies in the race.

Marcel Schrotter could not convert his warm-up speed into racing pace and took the checkered flag in twelfth place.

The remaining points went to Bo Bendsneyder in 13th place. for NTS RW Racing, Tetsuta Nagashima (Red Bull KTM Ajo) as 14th. and Aron Canet (Pull & Bear Team Moto2) as 15th. for a start after his long lap penalty.

Canet became Moto2 rookie of the year after his closest rival in the overall standings, Hector Garzo, retired after six laps.

Jorge Navarro fell in the same lap, and Kasma Daniel, Edgar Pons, Andi Farid Izdihar and Simone Corsi failed to make the distance.

Fabio Di Giannantonio and Nicolo Bulega didn’t make it through the first corner after the Speed Up man’s fall when he picked up Bulega, who was obliterated from his body, not from the bike. Together with Garzo they visited the medical center for check-ups.
