GREAT: Padraig Amond believes Manchester United Legends Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes will inspire Salford in the FA Cup

PADRAIG Amond helped Newport County AFC enjoy some magical moments in the FA Cup and the striker believes Salford’s attempt to create a legacy in the famous competition is inspired by its famous owners.

The rivals of the second division meet this afternoon (13. Midnight) at the Rodney Parade. The winners advance to the third round hoping to draw a great Premier League weapon.

This would be an opportunity for another chapter in County’s love affair with the FA Cup after victories against Leicester, Leeds, Middlesbrough and Blackburn, a draw with Spurs and a replay of Wembley, and an argument with the Manchester City stars.

Amond was a leading figure in these exploits, scoring against Tottenham, the Foxes, Boro and Pep Guardiolas superstars.

County has been pampered in competition for the past few years and the Irish striker believes today’s opponents want to follow in their footsteps, backed by some of the biggest names in English football.

Former Manchester United stars Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Phil Neville are partners in the Ammies.

« Everyone is intrigued by what Salford does because of its owners, » said Amond. « When I grew up with the FA Cup, these owners had a long history and are some of the most successful players in any game in the competition.

« They want to write a piece of history for Salford, and it’s a young Football League club. So it’s new for them to get into the first and second round of the FA Cup.

« You have a great opportunity to create your own legacy in competition. They will also be focused on the league, but these owners are close to their training ground.

« The players will use their thoughts and memories from the FA Cup and that will encourage them. «  »

Salford heads to Rodney Parade with a strong squad now led by Richie Wellens, who has returned to the second division after leading Swindon to promotion last season.

Exile boss Michael Flynn has called on his side to show more killer touch in front of the goal, and that responsibility is no longer just with Amond and his strikers.

« The most important thing this year is creating opportunities for everyone, » said the striker, who has won the county’s golden shoe for the past three seasons.

« We have mid-halves in the box that we would never have had in previous seasons.

« In the last round against Leyton Orient, Ashley Baker could have had a hat trick from the right-back, then Liam Shephard had a few chances against Port Vale. I joked that I want to play right back because that’s where the most chances are!

« It shows that we create the chances and that we are playing well. We just have to finish the games. « . If it clicks, it will be very interested. «  »

If it’s County making progress, they’ll add another game – one that will prompt the reorganization of the January trip to Cheltenham – to an already manic schedule list.

The exiles have 10 games in the next 36 days, a schedule that tests the promotions of the leaders of the second division.

« We may be close to December but we’re only 13 games in the league, » said Amond. « It’s pretty early on, and you’ve usually played four or five more games by then.

« It’s a little different, but we have a great chance this year and, unlike in previous seasons, we have depth in the squad.

« We may be better equipped for a cup run in recent years. We just hope that we can continue our good form in the league after focusing on the Cup this weekend.

« It’s going to be a tough month and if we still get out of where we are, the teams will really see us as scalps. We’re in a really good position, but this month is key. «  »
