While many of you may be focused on the ending of the Viking game, Gersson Rosas stays busy acquiring Ed Davis of the New York Knicks in exchange for Omari Spellman, Jacob Evans and a future round two election.
Minnesota is dealing with Omari Spellman and Jacob Evans and a future second round election to New York for F Ed Davis, the sources told ESPN.
I don’t want to be overworked on a relatively small transaction, but this is the kind of marginal movement that good organizations make. Sure, you don’t want to give away round two picks, but Minnesota has otherwise flipped two players who contribute absolutely nothing to a player in Davis who should keep the non-KAT minutes admirable.
Davis isn’t exactly a star or even a starter, but he’s a really strong support for a team desperately looking for a player like him.
So what exactly are the wolves getting in Davis? We’ll get into more depth with him in the coming weeks, but the gist of it is that he’s a great rebounder and a good defender. For his career, Davis averages 12. 0 rebounds per 36 minutes and 1. 5 blocks per 36 minutes. In general, he has been a favorite at every stop in his career. Davis has been on some good teams and using the single player net rating isn’t particularly useful, but at least it’s worth noting that the Davis teams on the court have never had a net rating worse than 4. Additionally, Davis has played 10 seasons in the NBA and never once had a season in which he posted negative offensive win shares, defensive win shares, or (obviously) win shares. He’s an impressive, if unspectacular player.
Yeah, no surprise here: D’Angelo Russell was way better at Brooklyn when he shared the word with Ed Davis than when he didn’t. Russell Davis on: 8. 7 net rating (O: 109. 6, D: 100. 9) Russell on, Davis off: -3. 0 net rating (O: 108. 5, D: 111. 5) (via @cleantheglass)
I don’t know about you, but that sounds exactly how the Timberwolves need it. He is an adult and a widely recognized teammate in the NBA.
DMs and lyrics are just inundated with people – players, coaches, media – who absolutely rave about Ed Davis. A very important step for Rosas.
One person who will be very pleased with the Wolves’ takeover of Ed Davis: D’Angelo Russell. The two played together in Brooklyn. Davis is very much valued as a teammate.
Is this the transaction that will result in parade routes being planned from the stone arch bridge to the finish center? No, definitely not. However, it’s another sign that Rosas can work on the edges to make the team better. Maybe that choice will hurt one day, but for now, Rosas filled a glaring hole in the list and picked up a really nice player without giving up on anyone who would have contributed to it this season. It’s incredibly impressive and it’s okay to celebrate small wins like this one.
It’s also worth noting that the Wolves opened a roster seat by swapping two players for one, presumably to bring back future Hall of Famer Jordan McLaughlin.
